Microsoft Open XML approved by ISO

Microsoft office 2007 document format Open XML has been approved by ISO and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as an international open standard.

“With 86 percent of voting national bodies supporting ratification, there is overwhelming support for Open XML. This outcome is a clear win for the customers, technology providers and governments that want to choose the format that best meets their needs and have a voice in the evolution of this widely adopted standard,” said Tom Robertson, general manager of Interoperability and Standards at Microsoft.

It is now even more likely that it will be adopted by other software vendors making it easier for all of us to exchange documents without the worry of compatibility issues.
